✈️ THE SHORT VERSION

A rental car is the easiest way to explore the Algarve, especially the west coast, the inland villages and the beaches between towns. Pick it up at Faro Airport when you land. Drivers usually need to be at least 21, and visitors from the US and the EU can drive on their home licence. The A22 motorway along the coast has had no tolls since 2025, Portugal drives on the right, and speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on normal roads and 120 km/h on motorways.

This guide covers whether you need a car, how to rent one, the documents you need and the rules of the road in Portugal.

Do You Need a Car in the Algarve?

Not always, but it makes a big difference. The coastal train and Vamus buses link the main towns, and tours with hotel pick-up cover the most popular sights. A car is worth it if you want to:

  • Reach beaches between towns, such as Praia da Marinha, Benagil and the coves around Carvoeiro.
  • Explore the west coast and Sagres, where public transport is limited.
  • Visit inland villages, Monchique and the wineries around Silves.
  • Stay in a villa or resort outside a town centre.

You can skip the car if you base yourself in Faro, Lagos, Tavira or Albufeira, plan to spend most of your time on the beach and use the train and tours for day trips.

With a car Without a car
Best base Anywhere, including villas and rural hotels Faro, Lagos, Tavira, Albufeira, Portimão
Beaches All of them, including remote coves Town beaches and those on bus or boat routes
Day trips West coast, Monchique, wineries, Seville Train towns and guided tours
Keep in mind Parking in old towns and at beaches in summer Fewer buses on Sundays and outside summer

How to Rent a Car in the Algarve

  • Where to pick it up: Faro Airport has the widest choice of rental companies, and picking up on arrival saves a transfer. Rental desks also operate in the main resort towns.
  • Book ahead: in July and August, and for automatic cars at any time of year, book well in advance. Most cars in Portugal have a manual gearbox.
  • Age: you usually need to be at least 21 to rent a car, and drivers under 25 often pay a young driver surcharge. Check the conditions of each company.
  • Payment: most companies require a credit card in the main driver's name for the security deposit.
  • Insurance: basic cover is included, with an excess. Read what the excess is and decide whether to reduce it before you collect the car.
  • Tolls: ask for an electronic toll device if you plan to drive on the A2 or other tolled motorways outside the Algarve.
  • Inspect the car: photograph any scratches or dents before you leave the car park, and check the fuel policy.

Documents You Need

  • Driving licence: visitors from the EU and the US can drive in Portugal on their home licence for a short stay. Drivers from other countries should check whether they need an International Driving Permit before travelling.
  • Passport or ID card.
  • Credit card in the main driver's name.
  • Rental agreement and insurance papers, which should stay in the car.

Rules of the Road in Portugal

Rule What to know
Side of the road Drive on the right, overtake on the left
Speed in towns 50 km/h (31 mph)
Speed on normal roads 90 km/h (56 mph)
Speed on expressways 100 km/h (62 mph)
Speed on motorways 120 km/h (75 mph)
Alcohol limit 0.5 g/l; 0.2 g/l for drivers with less than three years' experience
Phones Hands-free only
Children Children under 135 cm need an approved child seat, and under-12s normally sit in the back
Equipment A reflective vest and warning triangle must be in the car; rental cars include them

Roundabouts: traffic already on the roundabout has priority. Use the inside lane if you are not taking the first exit, move to the outside lane before your exit and indicate as you leave. Many roundabouts in the Algarve are large and busy, so take them slowly.

Speed cameras: fixed and mobile speed cameras are common, and fines can be issued at the roadside.

Tolls in the Algarve

The A22, the motorway that runs along the Algarve from Lagos to the Spanish border, has had no tolls since 1 January 2025. You can drive the whole length of the Algarve without paying.

The A2 from Lisbon to the Algarve is still tolled. It has toll booths that take cash and cards, and Via Verde lanes, marked with a green V, for vehicles with an electronic transponder. Do not drive through a Via Verde lane without one. If you plan to drive to Lisbon, ask the rental company for a toll device.

Parking

  • Old towns: streets are narrow and parking is scarce. Use the car parks on the edge of the centre in Lagos, Tavira, Albufeira and Faro and walk in.
  • Paid parking: many town centres have pay-and-display zones. Buy a ticket at the machine or by app and leave it visible on the dashboard.
  • Beaches: popular beach car parks fill up by mid-morning in July and August. Arrive early or late in the day.
  • Never park on yellow lines, in front of garages or on dry grass in summer, which is a fire risk.

Driving Tips for the Algarve

  • Fuel: petrol is gasolina, diesel is gasóleo. Check which one your car takes. Most petrol stations accept cards.
  • Navigation: a phone app works well, but download offline maps for the west coast and the hills, where signal can be weak.
  • Rural roads: inland roads are narrow and winding, especially around Monchique. Allow more time than your app suggests.
  • Cyclists and scooters: common on coastal roads. Give them space.
  • Summer traffic: the N125, which runs parallel to the A22, is slow in summer. Use the A22 for longer trips.
  • Drinking: the limit is low and police checks are common. Take a tour or a taxi on wine tasting days.

Can I drive in Portugal with a US licence?

Yes, for a short stay as a tourist. Carry your licence, passport and rental papers.

Are there tolls on the A22?

No. Tolls on the A22 were abolished on 1 January 2025. The A2 from Lisbon is still tolled.

Is it easy to drive in the Algarve?

Yes, on the A22 and main roads. Old town centres and inland roads are narrow, and parking is limited in summer.
