Lagos is a historic town in the western Algarve and one of the best bases in the region. It combines a walled old town with restaurants and bars, the rock arches and grottoes of Ponta da Piedade a short walk south, and beaches that range from small coves under the cliffs to the long sands of Meia Praia. Boat, kayak and dolphin trips leave from the marina, and Sagres and the west coast are within easy reach. Plan two to four days.
This guide covers what to see in Lagos, the best beaches, boat trips, day trips, where to stay and how to get there.

Things to Do in Lagos
1. Walk to Ponta da Piedade
Ponta da Piedade, about 2.5 km south of Lagos, is a headland of golden limestone arches, sea stacks and grottoes. A clifftop boardwalk runs from the area of Praia Dona Ana past the viewpoint above Praia do Camilo to the lighthouse on the point. At the end, 202 stone steps lead down to the water, where small boats wait to take visitors into the grottoes. Go early in the morning or around sunset to avoid the busiest hours.
2. See the grottoes from the water
The best views of Ponta da Piedade are from sea level. Boats and kayaks leave from Lagos Marina and weave through the arches and into the caves, and some trips add a swim stop in a sheltered bay. Kayak tours get closest, while boats suit families and anyone who prefers to stay dry.

3. Explore the old town
The old town sits inside 16th-century walls, with cobbled streets, small squares, restaurants and bars. Most of it was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami. Start at Praça do Infante, which has a statue of Henry the Navigator, who directed voyages of exploration from Lagos in the 15th century. From 1576 to 1755 Lagos was the capital of the Algarve.

4. Visit the Church of Santo António
The small Igreja de Santo António, one of the few buildings to survive the 1755 earthquake, has a façade from 1715 and an interior covered in gilded woodcarving and 18th-century tiles. It is visited together with the Lagos Regional Museum next door, which has archaeological finds, Roman mosaics and local crafts.
5. Learn the history of the slave market
The building on Praça do Infante known as the Mercado de Escravos marks the site where the first slave market in Europe opened in 1444, as Portuguese ships returned from West Africa. It now houses a small museum that tells this history.
6. See the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira
The small 17th-century fort at the mouth of the harbour, completed between 1679 and 1690, guarded the entrance to Lagos. Inside are exhibits on the town's maritime history.
7. Watch dolphins
Dolphin-watching trips leave from the marina and head out along the coast. Common dolphins are the species most often seen, and sightings depend on the day and conditions.

| Beach | Where | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Praia Dona Ana | Just south of the town | Cove under golden cliffs and rock stacks, reached by stairs; busy in summer |
| Praia do Camilo | On the way to Ponta da Piedade | Small, photogenic cove; its wooden staircase was closed in 2026 after a cliff collapse, so check before you go |
| Praia do Pinhão and Praia dos Estudantes | Between the town and Dona Ana | Small coves within walking distance of the centre |
| Meia Praia | East of the marina | Long, open sandy beach with space even in August, beach bars and water sports |
| Porto de Mós | West of Ponta da Piedade | Wide beach below high cliffs, with restaurants and a coastal path |
Keep back from the base of the cliffs on the cove beaches, where rock falls can happen, and follow the flags on all beaches.
