Choose the Algarve for long sandy beaches, a hot and dry summer, golf and easy day trips by car or train. Choose Madeira for mountains, levada walks through green valleys and mild weather all year, with winter days around 20°C (68°F). The Algarve is the better summer beach holiday. Madeira is the better winter escape and hiking trip. If you have ten days or more, you can combine both with a short flight via Lisbon.
Below we compare the two on beaches, scenery, weather by season, getting around and the type of traveller each one suits.
Algarve vs Madeira at a Glance

|---|---|---|
| What it is | Mainland Portugal's southern coast | Volcanic island in the Atlantic, off the coast of Africa |

| Landscape | Golden cliffs, sea caves, lagoons | Mountains, sea cliffs, laurel forest, terraced valleys |
| Summer | Hot and dry, highs around 29°C (85°F) | Warm, highs around 25 to 27°C (77 to 80°F) |
| Winter | Mild, highs around 16 to 17°C (61 to 63°F) | Milder, highs around 20°C (68°F) |
| Best for | Beach holidays, families, golf, road trips | Hiking, nature, winter sun, scenic drives |
| Getting there | Faro Airport, or train or car from Lisbon | Madeira Airport (Funchal), flight from Lisbon or direct from abroad |
Beaches
This is the clearest difference between the two. The Algarve has some of Europe's best-known sandy beaches, from the cliff-backed coves around Lagos, Carvoeiro and Benagil to the long open beaches of the Ria Formosa islands near Faro and Tavira. You can spend a week beach-hopping without repeating one.
Madeira's coast is mostly steep cliffs, and its natural beaches are mainly pebble or black volcanic rock. Swimming happens at natural rock pools such as those at Porto Moniz, at lidos and at a few beaches with imported sand. For a long sandy beach, Madeira visitors take the ferry or a short flight to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo.
Verdict: the Algarve, by a wide margin, if beaches are the main reason for the trip.

Scenery and Things to Do
Algarve: the coast is the main attraction, with sea caves, rock arches and clifftop trails such as the Seven Hanging Valleys. Add boat trips to Benagil and Ponta da Piedade, historic towns like Tavira, Silves and Lagos, around 40 golf courses, water parks, and nightlife in Albufeira and Praia da Rocha.
Madeira: the interior is the attraction. Levadas, the old irrigation channels that run across the island, have paths alongside them that make some of the most popular walks in Portugal. Other highlights are the laurel forest of the north, sunrise at the mountain peaks of Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo, the natural pools of Porto Moniz, the cable car and toboggan ride in Funchal, and whale and dolphin watching offshore.
Verdict: Madeira for hikers and nature lovers. The Algarve for variety and easy, relaxed days.

Weather by Season
The Algarve has hotter summers and cooler winters. Madeira stays mild all year, with a smaller gap between seasons, which is why it is popular in winter. Both get most of their rain between October and February. The table compares the official 1991 to 2020 climate averages for Faro (IPMA) and the Funchal Observatory.
| Month | Faro high | Faro low | Faro rain | Funchal high | Funchal low | Funchal rain |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 16°C / 61°F | 8°C / 47°F | 49 mm | 20°C / 68°F | 14°C / 58°F | 67 mm |
| April | 21°C / 69°F | 12°C / 54°F | 39 mm | 21°C / 70°F | 15°C / 59°F | 45 mm |
| July | 29°C / 85°F | 20°C / 67°F | 1 mm | 25°C / 78°F | 20°C / 67°F | 2 mm |
| October | 23°C / 74°F | 16°C / 60°F | 56 mm | 25°C / 77°F | 19°C / 67°F | 91 mm |
Weather in Madeira also changes with altitude and side of the island. The mountains and the north coast are cooler, cloudier and wetter than Funchal on the south coast, so pack layers if you plan to hike.
Verdict: the Algarve for a hot summer beach holiday. Madeira for winter sun and for travellers who prefer warm days without strong heat.

Getting There and Getting Around
Algarve: Faro Airport has flights from across Europe, and from North America you usually connect in Lisbon or another European hub. From Lisbon you can also drive in under three hours or take the train. Once there, a rental car is the easiest way to explore, though the coastal train and buses link the main towns.
Madeira: Madeira Airport, near Funchal, has flights from Lisbon, Porto and many European cities. Roads on the island are steep and winding but well built, with many tunnels. A rental car gives you the most freedom, while tours and taxis work well if you prefer not to drive mountain roads.
Verdict: the Algarve is easier to reach and to get around without a car.

Can You Visit Both?
Yes. With ten days or more, a week in the Algarve and four or five nights in Madeira gives you beaches and mountains in one trip. The usual route is a flight between Faro and Madeira via Lisbon, so plan most of a day for the transfer. Adding Lisbon at the start or end makes a natural three-stop trip.
