✈️ THE SHORT VERSION

The Algarve has four wine designations of origin, Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa and Tavira, and most of its wineries are small family estates in the countryside around Lagoa, Estômbar and Silves. The local red grape is Negra Mole. Many estates open for tours and tastings, usually by appointment, and you can visit three or four in a day. Because Portugal's drink-driving limits are strict, a guided wine tour with transport is the easiest way to go.

This guide covers the wine regions, the wineries worth visiting area by area, the wine tours you can book and tips for planning a tasting day.

The Algarve's Wine Regions

The Algarve is a small wine region, with about 2,000 hectares of vineyards. Its wines are classified in four designations of origin (DOP), each named after a town, and a wider regional category:

  • Lagos: the west, including clifftop vineyards close to the Atlantic.
  • Portimão: around the Arade river and Portimão.
  • Lagoa: the central Algarve and the heart of the region's production, with the largest cluster of estates around Lagoa, Estômbar and Silves.
  • Tavira: the eastern Algarve.
  • Vinho Regional Algarve: covers the whole region and gives winemakers more freedom with grape varieties and styles, including red, white and rosé.

Hot summers, Atlantic breezes and limestone and clay soils shape the wines. Negra Mole, the Algarve's traditional red grape, gives light-coloured, fresh reds and rosés, and many producers now make single-variety Negra Mole wines.

Wineries to Visit in the Algarve

Most estates are small and family-run, without a permanent visitor centre, so book your visit ahead even when a winery lists regular tastings.

Lagoa, Estômbar and Carvoeiro

The busiest area for wine tourism, a short drive from Portimão, Carvoeiro and Albufeira.

  • Quinta dos Vales (Estômbar): a 44-hectare estate with guided tours and tastings, a workshop where you blend your own wine, a sculpture collection and a wine hotel. It has been under new ownership since 2024.
  • Morgado do Quintão (Estômbar): an estate founded in 1810 by the Count of Silves and today one of the largest certified organic vineyards in the Algarve, with vineyard tours, tastings and farm lunches.
  • ARVAD Wine (Estômbar): on the banks of the Arade river, focused on Negra Mole, with tastings and riverside lunches. It can also be reached by boat from Portimão.
  • Quinta dos Santos (Estômbar): wine and craft beer, with a tasting room and restaurant.
  • Monte dos Salicos (Carvoeiro): a small estate about 3 km from the sea, with tastings and wine lunches.
  • Adega Cooperativa do Algarve (Lagoa): the regional cooperative, founded in 1954, with guided winery and museum visits.

Silves and the hills

Inland from Lagoa, the countryside around Silves has the largest number of small producers, many of them reached along quiet roads through orange groves.

  • Cabrita Wines (Silves): a family project since 1977, with guided tours of the vineyards, winery and barrel cellar and tastings with local cheese and charcuterie.
  • Quinta dos Sentidos (Silves): a 9-hectare estate that also produces olive oil, honey and citrus fruit.
  • Paxá Wines (Silves): family-run, with tours, tastings and vineyard picnics.
  • Quinta do Francês (Silves): an 8-hectare estate on the way up towards the Monchique hills.
  • Convento do Paraíso (Silves): vineyards around a 15th-century convent.
  • Herdade Barranco do Vale (São Bartolomeu de Messines): the northernmost producer in the Algarve, with vineyard tours on foot or by tractor.

Tips for a Wine Day in the Algarve

  • Book ahead: most estates are small and need notice, especially for tours and lunches.
  • Don't drive: Portugal's legal blood alcohol limit is low, and police checks are common. Take a tour, a taxi or a transfer, or pick a designated driver.
  • Group your visits: Lagoa, Estômbar and Silves are close together, so three or four estates in a day is realistic.
  • Go at harvest: late summer and early autumn is harvest season, when some estates offer grape treading and the vineyards are at their busiest.
  • Pair it with food: several estates serve lunches, and Silves has traditional restaurants for a break between tastings.
